These net outages in the Middle East

Four, or maybe five undersea communications cables have ceased working - been cut or shut down due to a power barf.  Nobody's sure who did what.  Early theories about anchor-dragging boats are now being denied, Iran is in a little net black hole, and the USS Jimmy Carter (the cable "maintenance" ship) is in the area.  Sober speculators and paranoid nuts alike are fizzing with ideas as to who, what and why.  Tinfoil beanies are go!

I know who dunnit.  It's obvious really: deep undersea action, a sense of paranoia, building yet unplaceable dread?

Wanders off singing "Marina, Aquamarina..."

"...What is that strange, enchanting, smell of fish in the air?
Marina, AquamarinaaaAAAaaaa..."

How did those words go?

Marina, Aqua Marina,
What are these strange enchantments that start whenever you're near?

Marina, Aqua Marina,
Why can't you whisper the words my heart is longing to hear?

Your magic to me, a beautiful mystery.
I'm certain to fall I know, because you enthrall me so.

Marina, Aqua Marina,
Why don't you say, that you'll always stay, close to my heart.

Apparently.

Dig around a bit. Iran isn't in a black hole. That's just an over reported quoting of stats from one particular site. Which was based on pings of one particular router.

Iran did suffer, but I was reading another stat type site this morning that reckoned it didn't even make the top 10 of countries suffering. This site was basing stats on routes via multiple peers.

Still, so many cable breaks in such a short time is very odd. Though I think one was shut down due to power reasons, which I could believe if it was now taking more traffic than normal trying to cover for the actually broken cables.

That's good to know. Hanlon's razor gains ground. :)
