Behold the works of Man

It's flat and hard and I can work on bikes on it! Behold the unnecessarily huge animated magic patio gif! The fence gets planted up with holly later in the year - it's the wrong time for it.

Now, what the hell do I call "laying a patio" in my training diary? 'Cos this ache has to be good for something...

Now, what the hell do I call "laying a patio" in my training diary?

That reminds me of a passage in a book (the author's name escapes me -- he does a lot of obervational comedy stuff) wherein the author asked some woman why she spent so much time looking for a parking spot at the gym, where she was planning on hopping on the treadmill for half an hour. Why not, he wondered reasonably, just walk to the gym and count it as part of the workout?

She was appalled by the very idea -- how could she know how far she went, or how fast she was going? "I confess that I had never noticed that the real world was so woefully deficient in this respect," snarked the author.

Ride there. Bike computers do all that for you :)

But your countrymen are famously wedded to their overpowered wheelchairs...

Or just time the journey, plot the distance on Gmap pedometer and work out speed from there.

Bill Bryson's Notes From A Big Continent, I believe.

Yes! It was definitely Bryson. Thankee kindly -- not being able to remember his name was irking me fiercely.

Holly

Want a holly? I may have a spare, self seeded from our menage a trois - one trad dark glossy spiky male, one variegated spiky female, one variegated non-spiky female. Two of them have produced a middle-green kind-of-spiky, gender unknown at the moment. Of course, getting it to you could be interesting: It's about four feet tall already...

If you subscribe to the 'thou shalt not move a holly' sect, you can have any number of seeds to do your own propagation. :)

Thanks, but I have a holly connection locally ;) My Man can do me a dozen whips in November, which will make a lovely hedge full of spiky keep-outness and berries. Question is, do I embed a young rowan or crab-apple in the hedge too..?

That is just so...manly. Work bench, spirit level, bits of string pegged out. I think we ought to start calling you Capability Gates (although that does sound slike a bad project management term). Where we you 6 years ago when we were laying the patio at Corry Rd, eh?

It'll be with that eco paint that doesn't stick or cover, won't it?
