How much work is it to cycle a mile? Run one? Swim one?

For me right now, ten miles on the bike are one mile on foot, and - here's the rub - that's about one length in the pool. So, since the lurgy-stricken Xeeny has kindly offered me his entry into Burhnam tri next (ohmyholyfuckinggods) week, I'll be working on my swim again. Today, for a benchmark, 500m in 50s, 21 minutes. Many pauses.

It makes sense to have a hack at the distance before doing it in open water, neh? A coach has been engaged for Monday.

Who am I and what did I do with the fat demigoth who normally wears this skin?

For what its worth, the cycle seems the most out of kilter bit to me. 5km run, no probs. 500m swim is surprisingly tiring, but I can now freestyle all the way. 20km cycle on the other hand has me coming of the bike shaking and sweating and gasping like a steam train.

My plan is to take the swim very, very easy and come out stable. Bike I plan to do the 1st half at hard exertion, then tapering during 2nd half to the end so I can actually run when I get off the bike.

One of those TI links you had had a good philosophy I thought - the tri is not 3 events, but 1. So, pace yourself for 1 event - as in the marathon, start out slow. Slower than you think you should - everyone around you will be racing off. When you get to the 2nd half of the race is when you start speeing up IF you feel you've got it left in the tank.

Have you arranged for any cheerleaders at least?

You're doing Burhnam as well? Cool. Must meet up!

My swim plan is just to make the distance - I expect to switch stroke some... more practice tonight. I'll open the bike easy to recover from the swim (!) then open the throttle and see how much time I can claw back. Energy/electrolyte drink on the bike. I'll ease off and up my spin rate in the last k or so. The run's just going to be my standard distance plod, never run on sand...

Luckily I can lay down on the tri bars after the swim! I'm mentally stuck thinking of this as two events and a LRP: a swim, a bike, and run/transitions as monster crew.

LOL! No, I'm not doing Burnham. I am doing Zurich on 1st of July, so I get to hear your pain before you get to hear mine.

I'm doing London, and I'm hoping Xeeny's lurgy will have cleared up enough to let him do it as well. But if it goes on much longer, he's going to start losing some fitness I reckon. We've already lost Big Nick, so if Xeeny goes down as well it will just be me. At which point, I have to say the thought of writing off the £70 entry fee and doing a local one instead does sound appealing, saving the air fares and freight for the bike!

That explains everything. Ah yes, the lake. Brain, gear. See? I got a brain, me.

If you're not carful I'll be doing London next year ;)

(If I don't burn out catastrophically like I did yesterday, that is!)
