The Dunwich Dynamo is an annual ride from Hackney to Dunwich, just south of Elaine's old stomping ground of Wobbleswick. It's 200km, more or less. Overnight, unsupported. Great fun. String of blinky lights away into the distance; eccentric wackos pulling alongside on tandems covered in fairy lights.

This year I had an outstanding challenge to do it on fixed-gear after packing last year. There was a tailwind, a good bunch, and by the gods, I had the legs. It was fast and fun and not easy - that sort of thing isn't easy - but not hard, not grim. I didn't bonk, thanks to Chuffy's Secret: Pizza. Energy food of the gods. Flattener of hills, bringer of smiles, de-clagger of cakey faces.

Alas, there was a fatal crash early on, which was absolutely unacceptable and the driver should be strung up by his intestines. Andrew Rawling, I never knew ya, but I hope that you're in a good place where punctures are a memory. Or, failing that, that you got a nice clean splat and just went from riding with your mates to plain not-being, which is almost as good. RIP.

The crash has left me with a fizzing carpe-diem kinda mood (now that the rage has faded), so I've gone and got my first date in, what, eleven years? Something like that. What's the worst that can happen?
