BlackLight: Cold fusion all over again?
Oct. 21st, 2008 09:09 pmRemember the good old days of arguing over whether or not cold fusion was real, fake, error or hoax, with just that faint frisson that the world could be about to change in a really groovy way?
Re-live those days again with the new BlackLight reactor! They claim that they can nudge a hydrogen atom's electron down below the normal ground state, so that when it combusts, buckets of energy are released. Theoretical physics ain't so sure (putting it mildly), but a New Jersey university has now verified a 50kw reactor prototype's net power output. Things get exciting.
Traditionally, we now get one of a series of disappointments: a catalyst is being consumed, a surprise environmental factor is involved, measurement errors, irreproducibility, or just plain fraud. I hope not. Time will tell!
