OpenStreetMap on Garmin
Mar. 17th, 2009 11:04 pmGarmin map updates tonight to the map folder. As usual, free routable UK and Ireland with topo in one hefty file. There are two styles: Default, and my new one, Munky. Munky has:
- More attractive UK road styles (IMO) with road colours that fit UK mapping conventions.
- Land styles that borrow from the OpenStreetMap look and feel (check out graveyards).
- Cycle routes blazed blue, distinct from footpaths. I'll be interested to see how this works on a route that is both a road and a cycle route, like the on-road NCN sections.
- Gates and steps marked (because they matter on cycle and footpaths - try towing a trailer or riding a tandem or wheeling a wheelchair down a 'leisure path' only to disover a bunch of steps or a gate that sends you back the way you came, muttering darkly).
- Various highway POI added (traffic lights, mini-roundabouts, zebra and level crossings)
- Better POI naming so the search is more pleasant.
- Some adjustment of zoom levels so letterboxes don't obscure the important stuff: pubs and cafes!
- A bunch of useful shop-type POI added (in particular, bike shops).
- UK style icons for some other stuff.
