They've been doing it for a while and I've never liked the idea. Things are a balance I suppose and having people rioting across the city isn't great either. But arresting and prosecuting people who cause damage seems like what should be done, rather than having a method that basically arrests lots of people without due cause or redress.
The police always ask for lots of powers. Why wouldn't they. The problem is politicians who grant all their requests.
