The BBC are running a poll on whether or not the footage of Steve Irwin's fatal stingray attack should be aired.

With the entertainment media already a glorified freakshow and part of the appeal of programmes like Crocodile Hunter the vicarious thrill of the risk, isn't it hypocritical to say that the one time the beastie got lucky, it's inappropriate to show it?

It's definitely hypocritical for people who furtively scoped out the Nick Berg beheading video to say this is inappropriate.

Actually, what I liked about Crocodile Hunter was being able to laugh at Steve Irwin when he inevitably had to high-tail it up a tree with an annoyed gila monster two yards behind him. It was, you know, funny. Narrow escapes are funny. A grown man haring up a tree like an oversized khaki squirrel is funny. There's really nothing funny about someone getting a poisoned barb in the chest and dying while you watch.

Well, not usually. Certainly not in this case.
