Pulling more wallboard out of my basement bathroom, I have revealed a stage set.  The real walls - well, the solid earth bank that I assume is real - are painted in shiny black waterproofing  Comfortably spaced within these walls is the frame on which my 'walls' were hung.  The sink, once assumed to be up against the wall, is standing a yard from the real edge of the space.  It feels weird.  It feels fake

I have a holodeck bathroom, arbitrarily projected into a shiny black space.  It's very strange, and because only half of one wall is gone, it's easy to think that the rest of the room is open to this space as well.  Maybe the bathroom is a set in a warehouse?  What about all the other walls?  All walls?  Hell, why am I even assuming that the black walls are real, when next door found a room underneath the road by kicking through one of theirs.

I'm so glad I don't do acid.

I hope you're going to go all Mole Man in a roadward direction next.

Can I assume that you're going to kit yourself out with head torch, string, paper to map with and a 10' pole, before exploring this new found area this evening?

Don't Panic

All projected walls are only visible to subject.

Real walls are objective and supportive.

Thank you for playing.
Carl.

That doesn't help! My walls are... squishy.

Reality is squishy.

Well the best bits are rather squishy.

If we didn't have proper space between reality and subjective walls then the condensate would make us all soggy. Who knows where -that- would lead. Perhaps we would all get wet mold spores and pale fungal shoots creeping along the edges of our mind space, turning the edges dingy and slightly smelly until the slow deterorating slump of the membrane walls.

Some people say this has already happened.

After getting mould spores growing in my lungs, killing my autumn race season and requiring bloody steroids to clear, I say "Fie!" to squishy.

Aye bugger.

Andy the lung-haggis. You will not pass Go. You will not be imported into the US as a foodstuff.

I should be thankful for small mercies.
