Yes, but there is a big difference between small areas of open water (like the one the subs have surfaced in) and large expanses of open ocean. Also, the increased ice at the South is to be expected from warming, as it raises the temperature from -Crikey to -Crikey+n, allowing increased precipitation which (as precip down there is white and crunchy) will lead to increased buildup. This is all consistent with the models.
