Bamboozled

I have this crackpot idea to grow a bicycle trailer.  Carry Freedom have a very fine plan for such a beast.  But what variety of bamboo should I plant for 2-3 metre straight stalks about 40mm in diameter?  And could I grow it in Devon?

Bamboo can really spread and piss off your neighbours so you might want to check for easily controllable varieties (if such things exist).

The stuff we've got in our garden is Phyllostachys Nigra, which the gardening guy assured us wouldn't spread out, just up. So far he's been right. Mind you, he also said it could take five years to reach it's full height from the size we bought and we think some of its got there in less than two years. It was growing at about an inch a day last month!
