Sanctuary

So... I caught an episode of ITV's Sanctuary the other night: it's trailed as a sort of Pirmeval meets X-Files meets Fortean Times.  How good was it?  Well, ITV never do this sort of thing well, so could they do it enthusiastically badly?

Invisible carnivore tribbles.

Invisible carnivore tribbles that give off buckets of pheromones, no less, and looks-to-camera when things get absurd.  I think they've got a winner.

So far it has been so bad that every week I have to toss a magic coin to see whether or not I'll watch it.

I keep waiting for it to find its feet and get better.

Damn, keep forgetting to watch that.

Of course, mainly I'm waiting for the end of the week when Sky 1 returns to Virgin Media and I can watch Fringe - gruesome plagues, mysterious cylinders - sounds my kinda thing.

The review in the Fortean Times was Not Good.

See, I kinda hope that Sanctuary gets worse, gloriously absurd - the fish-headed man in the smoking jacket and the giant tribble hoover were close to a sort of apogee of inanity but the characters do need to find their feet...

I think I'd confused Fringe and Sanctuary in my head.

Doesn't matter - I need to experience the (probable) awfulness for myself.

It all feels a bit like Charmed to me, what with the ass-kicking girlie who always seems to be desperately looking for the autocue, and the bland leatherclad demons-of-the-week. I might give the one with the tribbles a go, though - I've got it recorded.

It's very bad. What other beasties have turned up? Did the fish-head man in the smoking jacket have an episode of his own?

And crikey, isn't the grunty-but-gentle werethingy bloke ripped straight from Dark Angel?

There's been some Eugene Tooms-alikes and Jack the Ripper, and a crime boss with patagia. I think the fish-head guy's new.

I'm not sure it's even Dark Angel - I mean, it is, but I think they're reaching all the way back to Beauty and the Beast for their references.

Tangent, but I finally found a steampunk amber ring - I got one from this Etsy shop, they do really nice work.

I'd forgotten about Beauty and the Beast until now... and now I've had to spend most of my workday explaining dreadful 80s telly to my colleagues. They hadn't heard of Sapphire and Steel, I mean, really!

Nice shinies!
