"All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is Life. Medium atomic weights are available -- Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver, and Steel. -- Sapphire and Steel have been assigned..."

That is all.

The 80s: better in recollection than they ever were at the time and ever will be if you see 'em again.

I used to love the episodes with the "guest elements".

Silver was a dude. Or at least I thought so when I was like 4 or something. I liked ABBA too.

You could mistake Sapphire for an element if you were a kid, but Abba? They were a band!

I just remember it being really weird, that sort of weird you get when you're all migrainey in a hotel, somewhere you don't belong and you can't quite work out what or why or who is going on.

That's a show I somehow managed never to watch - I remember David McCallum more from the Invisible Man series - and I only heard that opening when I bought the Cult Fiction CDs. I much preferred the crazy world of U.F.O., not to mention the funky title music. Then I watched The Prisoner, and the world suddenly made sense. It's been like that ever since.

Spooky!

And we've got a system like that at work, too. :)
