CIMG2613 (by andygates) And it came to pass that the laptop bulb was dead, dead, dead - so it was declared, "There's nothing to lose in attempting a fix." Let there be many teeny tiny screws, and the cunning expedient of putting the service manual on a palmtop. And lo!   After a few hours and a cuppa there was a new backlight, and it was scorching bright and evenly white, and this was good.

But the People did gaze upon the screen and say, Failymandias, what is this thing we see?  It looks like a huge ugly crack in the screen and dead pixels, yea, unto the third generation.

And Failymandias did see this flaw and was vexed, for his big daft paws had torqued the delicate bits and tweaked the fragile bits beyond endurance, and all was doom and destruction and woe.

Ah well.  It'll do for now.  I wonder if there's anything tasty in the sales..?

Netbook for £199 plus £10 for the housing for your old laptop harddisk?

All the good stuff is already on an external disk. But a netbook screen is small - I'd get the same effect by taping off the ugly part! :)

That *would* get you into Make. 'Make your own netbook from a dead laptop'...

According to the netbook-haters, "dead laptop" is a good description.

I fear that me and my crack are going to become Recession Buddies. At least until I nab something dead from work. There's a sick Vaio that got junked before the hols...

Surely ebay is your friend? same model, new lid? if it's a generic made by FIC or whoever in Taiwan, why not score the model number, and have a poke around for a dead unit with a good screen?

Assuming you want to recycle it, that is.
