For today's run, I went out with my regular rucksack and a Platypus bladder.  This was all state-of-the-art in 2002 when I bought it for hiking and biking, but the bag (loaded with a dummy load of fleece et al) was pretty bouncy on the run and worse than that, the platty bladder was crinkly like unto a heavy crisp bag.  A very chatty load.

So, dear flist, what running hydration backpacks do you like?  Is the current generation of Camelbak bladder quieter - would swapping the bladder alone be a smart fix?  Are there running backpacks that really do stay put like unto a blasphemous monkey/limpet hybrid?

What are you looking for?

Running, the Camelbak Alterra (I think you'd have to go for the Montana or FlashFlo now) is pretty good, but it's a waistpack and probably doesn't carry enough for your purposes. Depends on how much you need to carry.

Innov8 do some good stuff now. Not so much for girlies (the fit's all wrong) but they have some decent packs. OMM obviously do very good, lightweight kit. I'm currently running with a Salomon Raid, which isn't perfect but does what I want.

Yes, tech has come on since the Lowe Alpine you've got, but not as much as you might think. It's still a matter of finding something that fits in the first place, which is a helluva lot easier for boys.

In terms of bladders, the new ones are softer material so collapse -- if you get rid of the air in there when you fill them then they implode as you remove water instead of being splashy. Again, I always preferred Camelbak to Platypus anyway, but check out Source and the Innov8 bladders too. You may even find that you're happy running with a couple of bottles rather than a bladder.

The kit list is small: Waterproof, torch, space blanket, mobile, nav. Add gloves, buff, etc for temperature management and a small FAK just in case (compeed!).

I'll check out those other brands. OMM look very secksy; Inov8's low horizontal bladder is cunning too - phwoar! May have to hit up a Snow + Rock for testage...

Running over my needs in a little more detail, it seems I have a fetish for hip pockets. I loves them, Master Frodo. The OMM Ultra 15 gets great reviews and has all sorts of Lake District cleverness.

Nice that OMM and Inov-8 are both UK companies...
