I hate starting blank notebooks and sketchbooks.  Hate it!  I've got two now, looking at me with their beady metaphorical eyes: a fancypants Moleskine indulgence that I took to Tignes and back without even taking the shrink-wrap off, and a tough little sketchbook that I picked up at the weekend to doodle in prior to 24HCD.

I think it's just that the front page needs to be nice, or worthy, or pretty - and I draw a blank.  Ha!  Performance anxiety perfectly internalised.  If you find my ancient corpse surrounded by hundreds of new blank notebooks and sketchpads, you'll know that I never got over it.

Heh - thought it was just me that did that.

You mean it's not just me? Yay!

There. That got it.

I do that.

I usually start on the next first page. That sorts it. There's nothing on the first pages of most of my notebooks, because inspiration just never struck.

Is this more common than I think, then?

Amongst notebook fetishists, yes. If the notebook is a mere tool for recording things, it's not important. But if your notebook is a little window into your personality, a memorandum of your print upon the planet, {insert poncy notebook metaphor of your choice here}, then yes.

You know what? This is one problem I've never had.

I usually have a stack of notebooks and paper (and pens! dear gods the pens!) to hand because the idea of running out of something on which to write is so unthinkable as to give me panic attacks. Honest to gods, full-blown, hyperventilating, cold-chill, palpitating heart panic attacks.

Heh. You'd start writing on something to hand, lest your head asplode. If I ever find you covered in handwriting and muttering "I'm running out of skin!" I'll offer you one of my blank notebooks.
