I don't usually do the charity fundraiser thing - I'm awfully shy about asking people for cash and it seems rude and slightly weird when I'm having fun.  But this Druid Challenge muddy marathon is different - it's keeping me awake with good old existential dread. 

So the charity thing is a hook.  It's the big ol' "you can't back down now, boy" that's going to keep me going at mile seventeen when the end is still out of sight and the sleet is coming down.  Yes, I'm exploiting cute little orphan children to push me to the finish.  No, of course I have no morals.

What charity?  Red Cross - "unconditional care in a crisis" is as close to universal good guys as you're going to find.  www.justgiving.com/andygates.

Yeah, that worked for me on TRAT. Well, two things actually: the starving baby orphans with their big eyes, looking mournfully at me every time I contemplated letting them down, and the fact that a tactless friend told me he'd sponsored me a v. generous amount because he didn't think I could do it, which gave me a dollop of "thcrew you hippeh" motivation to boot.

It's a sneaky hook, and I wonder how many people do it that way. Or how many of them do it deliberately that way. Of course, it may take some of The Fun out of it but it's a fair trade for the end goal.

Aw jeez, they're already doing it. I forget that many of my friends are richer than I. Well, top work you bastards.

I just hope I can do a whole training run without a poopy kaboom. :o
