The Times Square Bomber is making me giggle.  I shouldn't, I know: it's serious business.  But really, when you learn that his idea of a bomb is a couple of gas cylinders and fireworks and regular fertilizer, it's hard to keep a straight face.  Not a fertilizer bomb - not the old IRA classic, not the McVeigh Ryder Truck of the Apocalypse.  Oh no.  Just fertilizer.  That's like the flour for a cake without the eggs and sugar.  It would never, ever, work.  It'd go "bamf" and burn and, well, meh.

From this, the charge of attempting to detonate a WMD needs some serious "prosecutor, please" eyebrow raising at the NY law folks.  If that's a WMD, I have some lovely milky toast for you and a nice calming bedtime story.

He'd have caused many times more casualties by driving through the theatreland crowds.  Heaven help us if the Jihadis work out that every single supporter has a tonne of STEELY DETH under their arses.  Mind you, they'd have to work some to make the numbers stick: regular traffic in the US scores four times the 9/11 fatalities every year and noboy blinks an eye.  And mowing down a bunch of people, crashing your vehicle, is hard to do: it takes resolve (or psychosis) to be a proper hands-on murderer.

And of course the real serious business, which looks likely to apply to this guy as well as to our own Yokel Jihadi Nicky Riley, is that these incredibly shit wannabombers are vulnerable, or have mental health needs, or are just as dumb as fuck.  For this I say "boo!" to the bad guys who exploit such folk, and I say "yay" to Chris Morris for getting the satire in this weekend in Four Lions

I love the crap bombers. This one gets minus points for leaving a car there and running away, thereby reducing the chance of setting fire to his shoes / his nadgers / something else amusing which would be more traditional.

oxidising agent (fertiliser - which one? Ammonium nitrate?)
fuel (gas cylinder. little hard to keep in a good mix. and diesil is so much cheaper).
Ignition energy. (fireworks? well yes a little and very briefly. at close range. not nearly enough for a fert bomb).

He'd be better ditching the fert and get some O2 cylinders to go with the pro/butane cylinders. Let all the cylinders drain and just wait for pressure/static as ignition.

You can't buy oxygen cylinders at Home Depot.
