After about a year of heavy use, my main-room carpet got a bit stinky.  Well, I have cat'n'bikes and am a bachelor.  What do you expect?  So, figuring that actual cleaning was beyond my weekend activation energy (achieved: finish Tomb Raider Legend - that last boss was a pussy; purchase of Jammie Dogers) I went and bought a can on Shave 'n' Vac.  Doooo the shake 'n' vac and put the freshness back.

Big mistake.  Huge.

I am now allergic to my stinking citrus carpet.  Beltane, bless her, has learned to teleport over it.  I have not.  Where is the Undo button on domestic chores?

Try plain baking soda to neutralize the fragrance. Best of luck to you!

I was thinking he should dump a vat of vinegar on it next and watch the foam ooze out the windows...

Baking soda works moderately well on week-old dead baby bunny juices. I'm not convinced tho that it would do the same job with shake n vac. But it hoovering it up might help to clear the stink.

Yay, the bicarb worked! I now have a house that smells vaguely of bakeries. Much better - and no froth...

Most excellent! Rumour had it that it neutralized most odors, good, or bad. I did mean to add "vacuuming it up," but I sort of figured you knew that part. :)

Not really, the floorboards are probably rotten.

Time to rent the drum sander, then.

You can't polish rotten wood, mate... you *can* pretend it's not too bad under the carpets until you've finished one of the other rooms!

No, but you can remove the top 1/16" that's in bad shape. Now, if the boards are actually rotten all the way down, I grant a drum sander isn't going to help.
