My Nokia 770 web tablet has a dead spot on the screen.  It needs repairing or it's a chore to use - which means a new screen.  Now, when-new the thing was a couple of hundred pounds, but since the 800 came out, the value of the 770 has plunged and they're on ebay for under £100.  I'd be amazed if a screen replacement out-of-warranty cost less than the replacement cost of the device.  The screens themselves are available for €119; once you add postage to that it's close to the replacement of the whole unit.  And I want to casemod this anyway into a Clockwork Confabulator.

So, sports fans, does yours truly:

1: Just casemod the existing device, accepting that it is an end-of-life skunkworks product and that I'll have to live with the dead spot.  By the time I actually finish the project it'll be more obsolete than a Palm 3 anyway...

2: Replace the screen (risking bricking the device) then casemod away?

3: Get a second unit from ebay, and casemod the new or old one as takes my fancy.

Nah, the functionality isn't that hot; to be honest, I never got the use out of the 770 that I hoped. That small form-factor just isn't something you want to spend hours over. I'd be better buying a pennyfarthing.

I was going to ask you how attached you were to the 770- if you really liked it's functionality, etc- but you sort of answered that in your reply to skean. So, I'd say #1, especially if you can cable up to another monitor if absolutely necessary in order to finish the project. (Just in case the entire screen goes.)

Monitor? This is a teeny tricorder, it has no video out. But your point is taken, if I fat-finger #1 and, say, let the cat chew on the ribbon cables (it's happened before) then I can always resurrect it.

Time to get out the Dremel! I'll need fine Moroccan leather, brass leaf, sight-glasses and ivory-effect paint! *cracks knuckles*

Coffee. Float your soft rubber brain in coffee, as it's much more realistic that way.

Anyhow, you got the gist of what I was saying with or without my correction to "tablet." My daughter's friend was able to connect her old tablet to both her computer and to a larger tablet. Art Chick was jealous. Seemed like a reasonable suggestion, but I just may be more warped than I believed. ;)
